You have a website and new hosting, now what?  How do you upload and manage your website files?  There are a few ways you can manage your files in cPanel, which we will discuss in detail.

OPTION 1: Using cPanel File Manager

To use the new file manager within cPanel Paper Lantern, you must first login to your account on our site and access your Client Portal.

Under Your Products select Your Services.  This will bring you to your services page that lists any hosting you have with us.

You will then select View Details.  This page will give you options and details related to a specific website you have hosted with us.

Under the Information tab, simply click on Login to cPanel.  This will launch a new tab in your browser and automatically sign you in.

Once you are in cPanel, simply click on File Manager under the Files section.

File Manager will launch a new tab in your browser and display all your root directories and files.  You will want to make sure you double click on the public_html directory before uploading any files to your site.  The public_html directory is your website’s root directory.

NOTE: If you upload files outside your public_html directory, those files will not be accessible to the internet under your website’s domain.

Once you are in your public_html directory click on the Upload button at the top.  This will launch a new tab in your browser.

You can now drag and drop directories and files all at once or upload an individual file by selecting Select File.  This tab will show you the download progress of all files being uploaded to your website.

OPTION 2: Using FileZilla FTP Client

FileZilla is a common FTP client that you can use outside cPanel to manage all your files within your root directory.  You can download FileZilla HERE.

Once downloaded and installed, launch the program.

You are going to want to add your new site to the Site Manager.  Click on the button in the upper left corner of the FileZilla window.

Once the Site Manager window pops up, click on the New Site button.

You will name your connection under My Sites and fill out all the required information to connect.  Under Host, simply use your domain name without the WWW in front of it, example: mywebsite.com.  Leave the Port BLANK.  Next, make sure the Protocol is set to FTP – File Transfer Protocol and the Encryption to Require explicit FTP over TLS.

NOTE: We require all FTP connections on our servers to be fully encrypted.  If you select anything other than Require explicit FTP over TLS, your connection to the server will NOT work.

For Logon Type, use Normal.  For User and Password, this will be the same username and password you use to login to your cPanel.  If you do not remember your cPanel password or you need to reset it, please open a support ticket HERE.

Once you connect, you will be prompted with an Unknown Certificate window.  Since this will be a secure connection to our server, you will need to check Always trust certificate in future sessions and click OK.  You will not be prompted with this window again after your initial setup.

You’re done!  Congrats, you now have two options to fully control your website files!  Don’t worry, if you mess up and accidentally delete everything, we can restore all your files instantly.
